The poem “Death” by John Donne is known to be a great poem for a lot of reasons. For example its unusual language use makes it a really unique. It is also great that the whole poem is actually one big metaphor.
One reason for this poem to be considered great is its unusual use of language. The language that is used in this poem is old English. It also does not have correct spelling. An example of the old English is “Death be not proud, though some have called thee”. An example of the unusual spelling is “And dost with poison, warre, and sickness dwell”. This poem is made of 3 lines only which are then turned into smaller lines.
Another reason this poem is considered great is that it is all one big metaphor. This poem is about how death cannot control natural death but can control artificial death.
Overall this poem is a great poem. For its language and metaphor.
I like your idea that the poem is one big metaphor. But you haven't supported this statement with any text!
ReplyDeleteI know you have solid ideas. Don't rush through the writing! Think it through. Do you really think that unusual spelling and unusual language use qualify a poem for "greatness?" What if I was just a bad speller? Would that make me great?
